Ted Hughes: Dreamtime is a visual supplement to the book Ted and I by Gerald Hughes. It is a video in which Ted’s brother Gerald, whom he was very close to, and researcher Stephen Ely talk mostly about Ted’s childhood in Mytholmroyd and its surrounding region. This was the area where Hughes spent the first seven years of his life, which became seminal for his writing.

The video presents interview snippets interspersed with occasional footage shot at the original locations. Vicky Watling, Hughes cousin who lived down the road in Mytholmroyd, Carol Hughes and Frieda Hughes also make brief appearances.

The video presents the memories of a loving brother and a well-meaning researcher. This is a feature which makes it a very enjoyable watch, in particular when much of the media interest seems focused on love affairs and apparent failings (many of which turn out perfectly human at close inspection).
