David Wevill voices doubts over MSS sale

The StarPhoenix (and other papers) have published an article/interview with David Wevill concerning the inclusion of some of his papers formerly in posession of his wife Assia in the Roy Davids manuscript sale at Bonhams on 8th May. You can read the full item Opens external link in new windowhere.

According to the Opens external link in new windowBonhams website, the lot has been withdrawn from sale.

Update 15 April 2013:

Writes Roy Davids:

"More than twenty years ago Ted Hughes brought the photographs of Assia and David Wevill's papers to my house and asked me if I would contact David and ask him if he wanted them. I did telephone David and came away with the impression that he was not much interested in them. His recollection is that he asked me to send them to him and that he would pay for the transportation. I relayed my impression to Ted who said something like 'well you have them.' When I came to put my sale together they were, in my mind, something, like others items, that Ted had given me, fully aware that I was a collector and that in time I would have to make a disposition of that collection. I chose to do it by cataloguing it all for sale at Bonhams.

When the article appeared in the Canadian newspaper and David Wevill contacted Bonhams making it clear that he was happy for the photographs to be sold but was concerned about his own papers, I immediately informed him that I had instructed Bonhams to withdraw them from the sale and to send them to him without charge. He subsequently thanked Bonhams and me."
